Balaton limnology institute joins constitutional court challenge over lakeside construction

The Balaton Limnological Research Institute submitted a petition to the Constitutional Court, asserting that ongoing shoreline construction jeopardizes the lake’s already precarious ecological state. The institute highlights deteriorating water quality and reduced biological diversity, which they say are worsened by heavy concrete encroachment. A specific development, a four-storey, 99-apartment building proposed by Cordia on a former free-beach site, has sparked local protests, petitions and appeals to municipal and ministerial bodies, yet the project remains approved.

Adjacent to the site, the Pogányvölgyi stream flows into the lake, providing essential water replenishment and habitat value. The institute has joined a civilian complaint seeking a court review of one outlet government regulation on waterfront development, which they argue contains loopholes that permit harmful building practices. The petition requests a ruling that maximally protects the Balaton ecosystem and supports its regeneration.
