Ballistic missiles strike Kyiv overnight as Ukrainian air defenses scramble

Multiple ballistic missiles hit Kyiv in the early hours of Sept. 24, prompting air-defence fire and alerts, with no casualty figures released yet.

In the early morning of Sept. 24, Kyiv was rocked by a succession of ballistic missile explosions, with the first sounds heard near 1:00 a.m. local time. Ukraine's Air Force issued alerts for a missile approaching the city at 12:59 a.m. and a second warning at 1:27 a.m., after which air-defence systems opened fire. A further blast was recorded at 1:28 a.m., according to war correspondent Chris York.

No official casualty or damage reports have been released at the time of writing. The strikes come after a series of Russian drone attacks on Sept. 23 that killed two people and injured at least 43, damaging railway lines, residential blocks and a historic market. The capital has also endured jet-powered drone hits on Sept. 22, which wounded eight and struck multiple districts.
