Ballmer Couple Reorganizes $8 Billion Giving into Three Independent Groups

After two decades of donating more than $8 billion, Steve and Connie Ballmer announced that their Ballmer Group will be restructured into three independent nonprofits: MoveUp Southeast Michigan, MoveUp LA, and MoveUp Washington. The three entities will operate autonomously, each building its own board and adapting programs to regional needs, yet they will remain funded by the Ballmers. Current staff will transition over the next year, and existing grantees will see no interruption in support.

Terri Ludwig, CEO of the Ballmer Group, described the split as creating startup-like organizations that keep donors close to the work. Meanwhile, the original Ballmer Group will concentrate on a smaller set of scalable national projects. Financial details are still being worked out, with an endowment being one possible model.
