At a gathering in Flensburg, German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt disclosed plans for a collaborative drone defence task force involving all Baltic Sea bordering nations. The initiative aims to enable rapid information exchange to address the rising danger of hybrid attacks, including recent sabotage of undersea cables and critical gas pipelines that have occurred since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
Dobrindt warned that hostile actors are attempting daily to erode democracy, security and economic strength within the EU, and that the hybrid threat is omnipresent and may grow in the next months. Germany has heightened vigilance after an explosive-laden drone was discovered at Leipzig/Halle Airport, a key military logistics hub, earlier this month. While officials have not publicly assigned blame, some legislators have suggested Russia, which dismissed the episode as a fabricated provocation. The task force is expected to coordinate defence measures among the eight NATO member states bordering the Baltic Sea.
