Bangladesh Cricket Board pauses BPL season to overhaul franchise league
The Bangladesh Cricket Board announced that the Bangladesh Premier League will not take place this year as it works on a comprehensive restructuring.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board confirmed that the Bangladesh Premier League will be cancelled for the current season while the organization undertakes a major overhaul. President Tamim Iqbal cited non-compliance by multiple franchise owners and mounting financial losses—about 400 million Bangladeshi taka over two years—as key reasons for the suspension. The league has also been marred by a betting probe that led to player and official suspensions, as well as a boycott triggered by comments from BCB official Nazmul Islam.
Iqbal emphasized that the board intends to rebuild the competition properly, even if it takes up to a year, and is exploring the inclusion of foreign franchises. Discussions with existing owners are slated to conclude by April or May next year, and the BCB hopes the revamped format will restore confidence and profitability.
Why it matters
The pause highlights financial and governance challenges in Bangladesh's premier cricket league, affecting players, fans, and the sport's commercial future.
