Bangladesh elevates Humaiun Kobir to act as full Cabinet foreign minister for CHOGM

Junior Foreign Minister Humaiun Kobir has been granted full Cabinet Minister authority to lead Bangladesh's delegation at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting.

Bangladesh announced that Humaiun Kobir, the junior foreign minister, will act with full Cabinet Minister status to head the country's delegation at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, according to a government notice. The move follows his recent role supporting UN General Assembly President Khalilur Rahman. In a seminar, Kobir highlighted Bangladesh's intention to resolve water-sharing issues with India through diplomatic talks and referenced the legal framework governing such negotiations, noting the imminent expiry of the Ganges treaty in December 2026.

He affirmed that Bangladesh will pursue terms favorable to its interests while seeking dialogue with Indian counterparts via the Joint River Commission and Joint Water Commission. India's Ministry of External Affairs, represented by spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, responded by emphasizing a continued focus on positive, people-centric engagement and regional development.

Why it matters

The appointment gives Bangladesh a senior voice at a major international forum and underscores ongoing water-sharing talks with India.
