Bangladesh faces escalating dengue crisis as October approaches

Bangladesh entered October amid a surge in dengue cases, intensifying pressure on hospitals already coping with a severe measles outbreak.

Bangladesh began October confronting a worsening dengue outbreak after September became the deadliest month on record, exacerbating strain on a health system battling the world’s worst measles epidemic. Experts attribute the surge to recent rainfall and changing climate conditions that favor mosquito breeding, warning that cases could rise throughout the month. Since January, the health ministry reports 245 dengue deaths and 79,620 admissions, with September alone seeing 148 fatalities.

Hospitals remain overwhelmed, with patients like police sergeant Shafiqur Islam struggling to secure beds despite receiving transfusions. Authorities call for intensified vector control, removal of stagnant water, and stronger household prevention to ease the burden on already stretched facilities.
