Bangladesh opposition leader backs Indian protests, former adviser eyes Modi's fall

Bangladesh National Citizen Party convener Nahid Islam supported the CJP-led demonstrations in New Delhi and a former adviser to the interim government said he awaits Narendra Modi's downfall.

In a statement posted on X, Nahid Islam, convener of the National Citizen Party and a senior figure in the July 2024 movement that briefly removed Sheikh Hasina, voiced support for the CJP-spearheaded protests in New Delhi. He framed the demonstrations as part of a broader South Asian fight for democratic accountability, urging young Indians to resist communal hatred and fascist tendencies. Islam also highlighted Bangladesh’s own student-led uprising against authoritarian rule and cited historic Indian resistance movements such as Shaheen Bagh and JNU activism.

Joining him, former adviser to the interim government that succeeded Muhammad Yunus, said he is waiting to see Narendra Modi’s downfall, arguing it would weaken anti-Muslim politics, weaken Israel’s regional ally, and ease social inequality. The adviser described Modi as under pressure from “cockroach bites.” Both speakers called for solidarity across borders to protect democratic institutions and human dignity.

Why it matters

The statements show cross-border political solidarity that could influence democratic activism in South Asia.
