Bangladesh says Prime Minister's India trip hinges on Hasina's extradition

Bangladesh has informed India that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's prospective visit depends on New Delhi speeding up the extradition of former premier Sheikh Hasina and other fugitives. Foreign ministry official A.K.M. Shahidul Karim emphasized that the necessary preconditions for the trip are still lacking and that a conducive atmosphere must be established first.

India has responded that the extradition request is currently under review. Bilateral talks are exploring a possible window between August 20 and 25, though no formal itinerary has been set. Relations have been strained since Hasina was removed from power in August 2024 and sought refuge in India, where she faces a death sentence. Her recent media appearances from Indian soil have further complicated the diplomatic climate, while broader discussions will also cover border management, trade, visa normalization and water-sharing issues.
