Bangladeshi Hindu leader Chinmoy Krishna Das granted brief parole for mother's funeral

Authorities in Bangladesh authorized a five-hour parole for Hindu rights figure Chinmoy Krishna Das after his mother, Sandhya Rani Dhar, died in a Hathazari hospital. Deputy commissioner Mohammad Zahidul Islam Mia issued the order following an application by Das’s brother. Das attended the funeral in Hathazari and was required to return to prison within the limited window.

He was arrested in November 2024 on sedition accusations tied to alleged disrespect of the national flag, sparking protests and communal tension. Das also faces murder, attempted murder and vandalism charges, with bail granted in four of six cases but withheld for the sedition case. Ongoing legal proceedings include a murder trial linked to the killing of prosecutor Saiful Islam Alif during protests over Das’s arrest.
