Bank employee accused of illegally accessing accounts of top Italian officials

The public prosecutor’s office in Bari, led by Roberto Rossi and assisted by Bruna Manganelli, has notified Vincenzo Coviello, a 54-year-old employee of Intesa San Paolo’s Agribusiness branch in Barletta, to attend an interrogation. He faces accusations of unlawful entry into computer systems and the illicit acquisition of confidential financial data belonging to high-level political and institutional figures. The alleged activity was most intense between 2018 and 2023, with an earlier incident recorded in 2011, and was carried out over 460 days between February 2022 and April 2024 across 685 branches.

Prosecutors allege that Coviello accessed the accounts of more than three thousand clients without legitimate business purpose, violating secrecy obligations and misusing personal data for personal gain or to cause harm. Among those purportedly targeted are the President of the Republic, the President of the Senate, former prime ministers, several ministers, euro-parliamentarians, and the governor of the Bank of Italy.
