Banks clash over Sunday work status on September 27, 2026
The All India Bank Officers’ Association has told its members to stay home on September 27, calling it a holiday, while the United Forum of Bank Unions has not yet decided and the RBI has approved full operations for banks.
The All India Bank Officers’ Association released a statement on September 23 declaring September 27 a holiday under the Industrial Disputes Act and advising its members not to report for work. The association also announced a stay-out strike from September 28 to 30. In contrast, the United Forum of Bank Unions convened an emergency online session but deferred a directive until it gathers full instructions from banks and discusses the matter with the Indian Banks’ Association.
The Reserve Bank of India has granted permission for all bank branches, ATM-linked outlets and currency chests to stay fully operational on the same day. State Bank of India posted a notice confirming that all its branches will be open and provide regular services on Sunday, September 27, 2026. The differing positions create uncertainty for customers and staff across the banking sector.
