Bankstown accountants arrested for facilitating multi-million dollar loan fraud scheme
Three staff members of a Bankstown accounting firm, including its director, were detained for allegedly helping a criminal syndicate obtain millions of dollars in fraudulent loans.
Detectives, assisted by the NSW Crime Commission, the Australian Taxation Office, ASIC and the Tax Practitioners Board, executed a search warrant at a Bankstown accounting firm, arresting its director and two accountants. Authorities allege the trio used their professional roles to approve and process fraudulent loan applications, contributing to a scheme that secured $16.2 million, $15.6 million and $14.5 million respectively.
Earlier raids in Smithfield and Cabramatta West resulted in the detention of two women accused of acting as money mules for loan fraud totalling nearly $18 million. The arrests bring the total number of individuals charged under Strike Force Myddleton to 33. Detective Superintendent Gordon Arbinja highlighted the coordinated effort to exploit loan systems, while ATO Deputy Commissioner Pennie Snowden warned that professional facilitators will face intensified scrutiny. Bail decisions varied, with the two men denied bail and the woman granted conditional release pending a court appearance in October.
