Barkhad Abdi and Jim Deddes headline new Dutch-Belgian film Maalstroom

Oscar-nominated actor Barkhad Abdi and Jim Deddes lead the recently completed Dutch-Belgian drama Maalstroom, whose first-look image has been released.

Maalstroom, a Dutch-Belgian co-production, has wrapped filming and its first-look image is now public. The picture stars Oscar-nominated Barkhad Abdi, Jim Deddes as barge captain Jan, and Tenzing Woing as deckhand Edward, alongside a supporting ensemble. Teddy Cherim wrote and directed the project, while Marten van Warmerdam produced it.

The plot centers on Jan’s desperate sand run from Dunkirk to Rotterdam, which turns into a humanitarian crisis when he finds 11 refugees concealed in the cargo, forcing him to confront Europe’s migration paradox. Cherim describes the film as both serious and unexpectedly light-hearted, using the surreal ship setting to highlight bureaucratic absurdities. Production is backed by Graniet Film, Czar Film & TV, NTR and a slate of European funding bodies, with Paradiso Filmed Entertainment planning a Benelux release next year.

Why it matters

The film tackles Europe's migrant crisis through a human story, adding cultural dialogue to a contentious political issue.
