Barnardos urges cross-party action to safeguard New Zealand children, warns $450 bn cost

Barnardos staged a protest on the steps of Parliament to promote its Generational Plan for Children, with chief executive Matt Reid demanding sustained, cross-party commitment to improve outcomes for tamariki by 2050. He warned that inaction could impose a $450 billion burden on the economy and called for a permanent children’s cabinet and full adoption of the Royal Commission of Inquiry into Abuse and Care’s findings.

Reid also cited the Phillips case as an example of systemic failure and urged greater funding for schools, early-learning centres and community services. Representatives from Labour, ACT, National, the Greens and the Opportunity Party all voiced backing for the plan, emphasizing early intervention and an all-government approach, while NZ First did not attend. The appeal underscores a shift toward viewing child welfare as integral to national development rather than a short-term political issue.
