Baseline Study on Malaysia's Disaster Management Bill to Finish Within a Year
Malaysia's National Disaster Management Agency will complete its baseline study on the proposed Disaster Risk Reduction Act within 12 months, Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said.
A baseline study on the suggested Disaster Risk Reduction Act, linked to the National Disaster Management Bill, is slated for completion within a year, according to Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. Conducted by the National Disaster Management Agency, the study's results will be examined alongside input from various ministries and agencies before finalising the policy and legislation. Zahid Hamidi said a precise date for presenting the bill in the Dewan Rakyat remains undecided, as officials are still evaluating the necessity and shape of the legislative framework.
He stressed that the government wants the law to address actual gaps in one outlet system rather than enact legislation without proper analysis. The approach aligns with Malaysia's emphasis on science-, data- and technology-driven disaster preparedness, early warning, clear command structures, and coordinated response.
Why it matters
The study will shape Malaysia's future disaster legislation, affecting how the country prepares for and responds to emergencies.
