BASF evaluates building a new MDI plant on land secured in Dahej, Gujarat

BASF has secured land in Dahej, Gujarat, for a potential MDI production complex and is now in the advanced stage of a feasibility study. The decision to invest will depend on the study’s outcome and the acquisition of all necessary regulatory approvals. Stephan Kothrade, a board member and chief technology officer, noted that India represents a fast-growing market with rising needs for polyurethane applications in insulation, automotive parts, and consumer goods.

The proposed plant would add to BASF’s existing MDI sites in the United States, Belgium, China and South Korea, and complement its current MDI splitter and polyurethane operations at the Dahej integrated complex. If approved, the facility would enable BASF to supply MDI locally to Indian and neighboring customers.
