Basque Nationalist Party backs key housing decree in Spain's permanent chamber
The PNV announced it will support the first of two Sánchez government housing bills in the Permanent Deputation, making its vote decisive.
The Basque Nationalist Party confirmed it will back the first of two housing measures proposed by Pedro Sánchez's government, arguing that doing so is a matter of "coherence and responsibility" and will allow the decree to pass in the Permanent Deputation where its vote is crucial. The party continues to reject the second decree concerning indefinite rentals, ensuring that proposal will fail. In a press conference in Bilbao, PNV spokesperson Maribel Vaquero highlighted the gravity of the eviction problem and described the measures as a temporary fix, while lamenting that such a serious issue is being debated in a caretaker body.
She rejected claims that legislating in the Permanent Deputation constitutes a "fraud of law," noting its composition differs slightly from the full chamber. The PNV also pointed out flaws in the 2023 state housing law, which they say have driven a 50% rise in seasonal rentals in the Basque region, and mentioned that the regional government had previously appealed to the Constitutional Court over that law.
Why it matters
The PNV's vote could determine whether Spain's new eviction-prevention law is enacted.
