Basque nationalist party hesitates on voting for government's housing decree-laws
The Basque nationalist PNV has not disclosed how it will vote on the government's housing decree-laws, saying it will seek agreements rather than confront the government.
Maribel Vaquero, the PNV's voice in the lower house, said the party will study the government's newly approved housing decree-laws before revealing its voting intention on Friday. She argued that such measures, introduced by decree-law, are unsuitable for a serious issue like housing and stressed the importance of safeguarding vulnerable renters while not turning small landlords into enemies. Vaquero pointed out that in the Basque Country small owners account for roughly 90 % of rental housing, making them essential until a larger public stock is available.
She called for more social housing, legal certainty, incentives and a balanced approach of "more carrot, less stick". The PNV will pursue dialogue and negotiation rather than joining a confrontational stance with the ministry.
