Bavarian Justice Minister Georg Eisenreich Announces Resignation Effective End of September
Bavarian Justice Minister Georg Eisenreich said he will step down from his ministerial post at the end of September, while keeping his seat in the state parliament until the legislative term ends.
At a press briefing set for 11 a.m. in Munich’s Justice Palace, Georg Eisenreich announced his intention to resign as Bavaria’s justice minister by the end of September. He had previously informed Minister-President Markus Söder of this decision in a private conversation. Although stepping down from the cabinet, Eisenreich will retain his mandate as a Landtag member for the Munich-Hadern district until the legislative term finishes, pledging full commitment to his duties.
In his statement, the 55-year-old lawyer explained that after a quarter-century of professional life he wishes to transition to new tasks while still being relatively young. During his tenure since November 2018, he oversaw the creation of specialized prosecution units, advances in court digitalisation, and a legislative package to protect inmates after the Gablingen prison scandal. He also promoted the renaming of legal works linked to former Nazis. Eisenreich’s departure surprised many within his party, and it remains unclear how his portfolio will be reassigned.
