Bay of Bengal low pressure system expected to become cyclone by Oct 26

A low-pressure area over the east-central Bay of Bengal is forecast to develop into a cyclonic storm by October 26 and move toward the north Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha coasts.

A low-pressure area has emerged over the east-central and southeast Bay of Bengal, and officials anticipate it will intensify into a cyclonic storm by October 26, moving west-northwest toward the north Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha coasts. The Meteorological Department outlined a step-by-step strengthening: a depression on October 24, a deep depression on October 25, and a full cyclonic storm by the next morning. The system is driven by an upper-air cyclonic circulation and is expected to persist in the same region as it gains strength.

The Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority issued alerts for scattered heavy rainfall, moderate rain and lightning across many districts, advising people to avoid standing under trees or large hoardings. Recent measurements showed rainfall up to 87.5 mm in Alivelumangapuram and 57.2 mm in Dagadarthi on Thursday.

Why it matters

The developing storm could bring heavy rain and lightning to densely populated coastal areas, affecting daily life and safety.
