BC communities grapple with home loss and recovery after the Bald Range wildfire
The Bald Range wildfire razed most of Faulder and nearby Okanagan communities in early August, leaving dozens of families homeless and facing a long rebuilding process.
On the evening of Aug. 7, the Bald Range wildfire surged eastward, incinerating the majority of the small settlement of Faulder and causing extensive damage in Summerland and surrounding Okanagan locales, including the loss of an 80-year-old woman during the evacuation. Across British Columbia, the season saw more than 500 homes or structures damaged, with about 150 lost to this particular fire, yet the total area burned was only about a quarter of the 20-year average.
The Ministry of Emergency Management and Climate Readiness has deployed community recovery officers to work with local governments and First Nations on rebuilding plans and support services. Residents such as HVAC business owner Joel Patan are navigating insurance claims, hazardous debris, and a lack of basic utilities while trying to rebuild. Access to the devastated area remains limited, with permits required and security guards posted to deter looting. The BC Wildfire Service now reports the fire as under control as cooler fall weather arrives.
