BC NDP leader proposes millionaire tax to fund health care

David Eby announced that his party would add a tax bracket for incomes of $1 million or more to help pay for health services if re-elected.

David Eby, leader of the British Columbia NDP, told voters in Comox that his party plans to create a new tax bracket for individuals with annual earnings of $1 million or more, with the proceeds earmarked for health-care financing. The proposal is part of the party’s platform for the upcoming provincial election and will be elaborated further at a campaign stop in Victoria. Eby framed the measure as a request for higher earners to contribute during a period when strong public services are needed.

He also highlighted related initiatives, including price-guard mechanisms for certain groceries, a temporary 10-cent-per-litre cut to the motor-fuel tax, and plans to tax vacant condominiums and curb speculation. The announcements come as the NDP seeks to differentiate its fiscal agenda ahead of the Oct. 24 vote.

Why it matters

The tax could provide new funding for BC's health system while targeting high-income earners.
