BC NDP MLA Joan Phillip, 74, passes away

Joan Phillip, aged 74, the British Columbia New Democratic Party MLA for Vancouver-Strathcona and wife of Union of British Columbia Indian Chiefs Grand Chief Stewart Phillip, died peacefully on Friday afternoon while surrounded by family. The UBCIC released a statement confirming her passing, referring to her as Amshen, and asked the public to contribute to the B.C. Cancer Society instead of sending flowers. Premier David Eby issued a written condolence, describing her as a powerful and respected leader whose advocacy helped the NDP retain sections of the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act.

He highlighted her reputation as a valued colleague across the legislature. Phillip first won a seat in a 2023 by-election and secured re-election in the following general election. Her death is mourned by the NDP caucus, staff, and many community members.
