Bear breaks into Ulaanbaatar suburb home, kills man and maims woman as sightings soar
A bear entered a residence in Bayanzurkh district on the outskirts of Ulaanbaatar, killing a man in his 40s and seriously injuring a woman in her 50s, amid a sharp rise in bear sightings across Mongolia this year.
In the Bayanzurkh district near Ulaanbaatar, a bear forced its way into a home on Wednesday night, killing a man in his 40s and leaving a woman in her 50s with serious injuries; she escaped and received hospital care. Environment department chief Munkhbayar M said a 35-ranger unit is searching for the animal, which authorities intend to kill. Bear sightings have surged, with 24 confirmed incidents in the capital this year versus just a handful in previous years, and a total of 754 reports across 11 provinces, 80% involving females with cubs.
The government has issued hunting permits in eight provinces and is procuring tranquilizer darts for remote areas. A captured bear from Khentii province showed no food in its stomach, prompting a ban on collecting nuts and berries in mountain zones for the season. Similar spikes in human-bear encounters have been reported in Russia’s Krasnoyarsk region and Japan, where recent attacks have also resulted in fatalities.
