Beaver-inspired dams boost juvenile coho salmon survival in California streams
A study shows that installing beaver dam analogues in two northern California creeks raised average juvenile coho salmon survival from 8% to around 60%.
In the Scott River watershed of northern California, scientists installed beaver dam analogues—rows of wooden posts woven with willow or conifer branches—to recreate lost wetland functions. The first installations in Sugar Creek began in 2015, followed by additional work in French Creek in 2018, adding roughly 0.7 hectares of slow-moving water. Tagging and tracking juvenile coho salmon from brood years 2015-2020 showed mean survival rise from 8% before the project to 60% after, with Sugar Creek reaching 55% and yearly rates ranging from 6% to 90%.
The restored pools stayed cooler than unrestored reaches, offering refuge during warm, dry periods. The study also noted higher adult returns and a dampened drought impact on the salmon population, suggesting that such habitat engineering can enhance resilience of threatened fish in a warming climate.
