Becerra’s Quiet Campaign Raises Questions Ahead of California Governor Runoff

Xavier Becerra, the Democratic frontrunner for California governor, has largely withdrawn from the public eye since his primary victory, prompting Republican challenger Steve Hilton to allege that Becerra has refused eight debate requests. Hilton described the behavior as contempt for Californians, while Becerra’s campaign pointed to ongoing negotiations with networks and a recently updated website. The candidate’s public calendar is dominated by fundraisers and elite meetings, with only four press releases posted since late June.

Critics, including Consumer Watchdog president Jamie Court, note Becerra’s absence from key policy debates such as the wildfire liability overhaul. Despite the criticism, an August UC Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies poll shows Becerra leading 55% to 37%, and his team emphasizes his engagement through social media and visits to over 34 cities. The runoff remains weeks away, and the debate schedule is still pending.
