Bedri Hamza resigns as leader of Kosovo's main opposition party
Bedri Hamza announced his resignation as chairman of the Democratic Party of Kosovo, triggering an internal leadership contest.
On Wednesday, Bedri Hamza declared that he is stepping down from his role as chairman of the Democratic Party of Kosovo, a position he has held for less than a year. He called for an internal election and highlighted the importance of giving younger members a larger voice in the process. Hamza stressed that he will stay within the party as a committed voter and member of its political family.
His resignation comes five weeks after a Hague court sentenced former party leaders Hashim Thaci and Kadri Veseli for war crimes. The PDK, historically linked to the Kosovo one outlet Army, has fallen to third place in parliament, winning 22 of 120 seats, while the ruling Vetevendosje party secured 53 seats under Prime Minister Albin Kurti.
Why it matters
The leadership change could reshape Kosovo's main opposition and affect future parliamentary dynamics.
