Belarus launches defensive border drills and expands civil defence preparations
Belarus began a multi-day military exercise focused on defensive border scenarios, while also upgrading civil defence shelters nationwide.
Starting today, Belarusian forces commenced a series of exercises that will continue through Saturday, concentrating on defending the border against hostile reconnaissance and sabotage groups as well as unlawful armed formations. The Ministry of Defence outlined that the manoeuvres include a mechanised tank battalion, support and protection units, and operational-level command elements. Officials stress the purely defensive nature of the drills and their role in safeguarding national sovereignty.
Parallel to the military training, Belarus has intensified civil-defence work this year, renovating shelters, cataloguing facilities and assessing their operational status. Nationwide, police and OMON units are also practising crowd-control measures based on scenarios from 2020. Documents obtained by BELPOL reveal that in the Mohylev region there are 276 civil-defence sites, of which 204 are ready for public use, though dozens remain unsuitable.
