Belgium restarts Tihange 3 reactor as nuclear extension continues

Belgium’s Tihange 3 nuclear plant has been brought back online after a major maintenance shutdown, while the country’s nuclear fleet remains limited to two reactors.

The country now operates only two nuclear units - Tihange 3 and Doel 4 - which were slated to close in 2025 but have received permission to run until 2035. Both reactors were taken offline in early April for extensive work, and Tihange 3 has now resumed operations ahead of schedule, though it is not yet at full capacity. Plans for Doel 4’s restart are still pending.

Why it matters

The restart sustains Belgium's electricity supply and extends nuclear power's role in the national energy mix.
