Belvoir St Theatre launches post-fire 2027 season featuring A Clockwork Orange adaptation

Belvoir St Theatre is staging its first season after the workshop and warehouse were destroyed by a fire in June, centering the program on a fresh theatrical adaptation of A Clockwork Orange for 2027. Margaret Thanos, who first read the novel last year, partnered with Tom Wright to translate the story’s dystopian critique into a commentary on today’s misogyny, racism and right-wing extremism. The season also showcases Abbie-lee Lewis’s debut play Dirty Diamonds, as well as new works by Ayah Tayeh, Mehhma Malhi, Hannah Goodwin and Grace Chapple, many of which are co-productions with Melbourne Theatre Company, Queensland Theatre Company and Yirra Yaakin Theatre Company.

Support from Sydney Theatre Company, Opera Australia and audience donations enabled rapid set rebuilds for The Jungle and the Sea and The Book of Everything. The theatre’s artistic director Eamon Flack emphasizes cross-generational collaboration and resource sharing as essential to sustaining Australian theatre amid rising costs and a cost-of-living crisis.
