Benahavis wildfire spews smoke across Costa del Sol as strong winds drive flames
A fast-moving forest fire in Benahavis is generating a thick smoke plume visible across the Costa del Sol, with high winds pushing flames along the main road.
A forest fire ignited on Sunday in Benahavis, specifically the Ermita del Rosario zone, quickly grew into a fast-moving blaze that sent a towering smoke column across the Costa del Sol, visible from Monteros in Marbella. Witnesses report the flames racing along Benahavis Road and potentially endangering the area around El Paraiso Golf Club, driven by strong winds that are also causing the fire to jump. INFOCA’s initial response included one medium and one light helicopter, 23 forest firefighters, two operations technicians, an environmental agent, and a fire engine, with extra engines, five trucks, and two more helicopters dispatched from Cartama and further units from Estepona joining the effort.
A pyrocumulus cloud spotted from Estepona confirms the fire’s high heat output. Residents are advised to stay clear of the fire zone, keep windows closed if smoke drifts in, protect vulnerable individuals, and call 112 for any new outbreaks. This incident is separate from the larger July Benahavis-Estepona fire and occurs during Andalusia’s high-risk fire season, which runs until mid-October.
