Bend carpenter stops teen shooter at Silver Rail Elementary, saves dozens
Carpenter Kaylub Giamanco entered Silver Rail Elementary after seeing a 16-year-old with a shotgun and shot the shooter, preventing further casualties.
Kaylub Giamanco, a carpenter from Bend, Oregon, was dropping his two daughters off at Silver Rail Elementary for picture day when he saw a teenager with a shotgun near the school grounds. After the shooter fired at a pickup and a woman mowing the lawn, Giamanco followed, retrieved a.40-caliber handgun from his truck, and drove onto the school parking lot. He crawled inside, reached a shattered window, and entered a special-education classroom where the shooter was confronting a teacher.
Giamanco fired, killing the shooter and ending the attack that had already claimed three children and a 25-year-old teacher, with two others seriously injured. Police credited him with saving many lives in a school of over 400 students. In an interview, Giamanco reflected on his upbringing, informal military training from Iraq-war veterans, and the personal weight of his actions, saying he feels both gratitude and lingering guilt for the lives lost.
