Benidorm vies for European Green Leaf 2028, highlighting water and climate plans

Benidorm is a finalist for the European Green Leaf 2028 award, presenting its water-management and climate-adaptation strategies to a panel in Guimarães.

Benidorm has reached the final stage of the European Green Leaf 2028 competition, competing against Chiclana de la Frontera in Spain and Estarreja in Portugal. A delegation headed by Mayor Toni Pérez and Councillor for the Environment Mónica Gómez traveled to Guimarães, one outlet European Green Capital, to brief an international expert panel on the city’s sustainability agenda. The presentation focuses on water management, climate-change adaptation, emission cuts, and the use of green infrastructure to counter urban heat islands, all while supporting a high volume of tourists.

The European Commission highlighted these strengths in the earlier assessment round. The award ceremony on October 8 will name the winner, who will receive €200,000 to fund further environmental projects during its designated year. Benidorm hopes its repeat appearance will finally secure the title, showcasing that a densely visited city can combine a thriving visitor economy with responsible environmental stewardship.
