Benioff Couple's $100 Million Gifts Enable New UCSF Children's Hospital with Helipad

Marc and Lynne Benioff donated $100 million to UCSF, leading to the opening of a 183-bed children's hospital with a rooftop helipad in San Francisco.

The Benioff family announced a $100 million contribution to the University of California, San Francisco in 2010, earmarked for a new children's hospital on the Mission Bay campus. The facility, renamed UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital, opened on 1 February 2015 as part of a larger 289-bed complex, offering 183 pediatric beds, a specialized emergency department, intensive care services and a rooftop helipad to receive critically ill patients from across Northern California.

In 2014 the Benioffs pledged an additional $100 million to strengthen pediatric research, clinical programs and staff recruitment at both the San Francisco and Oakland hospitals, which were also renamed in their honor. The hospital’s design emphasizes family-centered care, with rooms accommodating parents and spaces for rehabilitation, play therapy and outdoor activities. Its proximity to UCSF’s biomedical research campus aims to accelerate the translation of scientific discoveries into clinical treatments, creating a major pediatric care and research hub for the Bay Area.

Why it matters

The donations created a state-of-the-art pediatric hospital, expanding critical care capacity and research for children in the Bay Area.
