Berg Glacier no longer reaches Berg Lake, marking stark climate shift

Scientists have confirmed that Mount Robson’s Berg Glacier has retreated enough to stop touching Berg Lake, ending the regular flow of icebergs into the water.

During a recent field project, an associate professor of geography noted that the Berg Glacier on Mount Robson’s north face has pulled back so far it no longer reaches Berg Lake, ending the seasonal release of icebergs that once defined the lake’s turquoise appearance. The glacier’s separation is viewed as a powerful visual indicator of climate change, especially as the area attracts many hikers on the famed Berg Lake Trail.

Although the lake’s water level is not expected to drop, the loss of direct iceberg input will alter the scenery. Parallel research shows that roughly 22 percent of glacier surface in Western Canada and Switzerland vanished between the mid-1980s and 2021. The region also suffered severe trail damage during the 2021 heat wave, prompting evacuations and a full reopening only in June 2025 after repairs.

Current efforts focus on deploying real-time weather stations to feed data into park management, wildfire and avalanche forecasts. B.C. Parks plans to make the data available by late 2026 to enhance visitor safety.
