Berkshire Hathaway invests nearly $1 billion in Italian tech group Bending Spoons

Berkshire Hathaway is adding a $330 million purchase of Bending Spoons shares to its earlier $600 million stake, taking its holding to about 4 % of the Italian tech conglomerate.

Berkshire Hathaway has agreed to purchase an additional 10 million shares of Italian tech conglomerate Bending Spoons for $33 per share, a $330 million infusion that follows a $600 million investment made at the company’s July IPO, bringing Berkshire’s ownership to roughly 4 %. The price represents about a 13 % discount to Bending Spoons’ closing price the day before the deal was announced, and the news propelled the stock up nearly 50 % in two days before it settled more than 20 % above its Monday opening level.

Bending Spoons, founded by Luca Ferrari, specializes in buying digital businesses—such as AOL, Evernote, Vimeo, Eventbrite and WeTransfer—and overhauling them with deep operational changes and AI. Ferrari described Berkshire as one of the world’s most respected capital allocators. The investment is notable because Berkshire has traditionally avoided technology firms, favoring low-valuation, predictable businesses, and may indicate a strategic shift under new leadership after Warren Buffett’s retirement.

Why it matters

The investment signals Berkshire Hathaway’s possible pivot toward high-growth tech assets, altering its historically conservative portfolio.
