Germany's transport ministry confirmed that Berlin Brandenburg Airport will be the inaugural German airport fitted with a drone detection system, responding to multiple recent drone sightings near airports. Minister Steffen Bilger emphasized the seriousness of drone-related threats and the need for rapid deployment of detection technology at all international hubs. Data from the German air traffic control authority show that the airport recorded the most drone alerts in the first six months, surpassing even Frankfurt, the nation's busiest airport.
A recent incident forced a temporary closure of the airspace above the airport, halting flights for about 45 minutes and diverting several aircraft to Dresden. The ministry plans to equip additional airports with similar systems later in the year.
