A fire broke out on the fourth floor of a six-story refugee accommodation in Berlin's Spandau borough, igniting hallway furnishings and sending smoke to the upper levels; fire crews evacuated several hundred people, relocating 50 to 60 elsewhere, while four individuals received treatment for smoke inhalation, three of whom were hospitalized. In a separate development, a three-member Taliban delegation arrived in Germany, lodging at the Afghan embassy in Berlin and scheduled to travel to the country's consulates in Bonn and Munich to supply Kabul-approved paperwork for Afghans slated for deportation.
Chancellor Friedrich Merz framed the engagement as a purely administrative necessity, whereas opponents claim it confers undue recognition on the Taliban. Germany had paused deportations after the Taliban seized power in 2021 and only resumed them three years later, initially targeting convicted criminals. The refugee shelter can house roughly 1,200 people, and the fire's cause remains under investigation.
