Berlin Greens approve coalition talks with the Left Party following SPD decision

The Berlin Greens voted overwhelmingly to start coalition negotiations with the Left Party after the SPD gave its approval.

Following the SPD’s green-light, the Berlin Greens held a meeting in Kreuzberg where 42 out of 44 delegates voted in favor of beginning coalition discussions with the Left Party. Werner Graf, head of the Greens parliamentary group, praised the inclusion of several transport initiatives in the joint exploratory document, such as new bike lanes and traffic calming measures. He also announced a shift away from extending the A100 highway.

Some delegates voiced criticism, labeling a partnership with the Left as risky due to alleged antisemitism issues. Nina Stahr, the Greens state chair, admitted the Left has internal antisemitism problems but said the parties have agreed on a joint statement to address them. The Left will decide on the negotiations at its upcoming state party congress.

Why it matters

The vote moves Berlin toward a potential three-party coalition that could reshape the city’s transport and housing policies.
