Berlin Greens push ahead with coalition talks despite Vanessa Emde controversy

Berlin's Greens say they will keep coalition negotiations with the SPD and The Left even after the Left admitted Vanessa Emde, sparking antisemitism concerns.

The Berlin Left faction recently admitted Vanessa Emde, whose anti-Israel stance triggered the SPD and Greens to halt coalition exploratory talks. Defying that pause, the Berlin Greens’ state board, led by Werner Graf, declared they will press on with negotiations to form a “Rot-Grün-Rot” government aimed at affordable housing, a genuine transport shift and socially-oriented climate protection. The Greens, together with the Jusos and Grüne Jugend, argue the joint anti-antisemitism statement remains valid, while the Left claims no deal was made to bar Emde from its ranks.

The Left’s faction also signed a declaration affirming the existence rights of both Israel and Palestine and condemning Hamas terror. Amid the dispute, the CSU called for ending the talks, and CDU finance senator Stefan Evers suggested a possible CDU-SPD-Greens coalition.

Why it matters

The dispute tests the viability of a left-leaning coalition in Berlin and highlights tensions over antisemitism standards.
