Berlin Left Party Faces Internal Vote Over Inclusion of Neukölln Deputy Vanessa Emde

The Berlin Left parliamentary group will convene to decide if all 45 elected members, including Vanessa Emde, will be admitted to the faction.

On Tuesday, the Berlin Left faction gathered for its inaugural session to vote on the composition of its 45-member group. The central issue is whether Vanessa Emde, the Neukölln deputy noted for her uncompromising anti-Israel views, will be admitted. The party plans to adopt a statute obliging members to follow party decisions, which currently endorse Israel’s existence.

SPD and the Greens are said to be pressuring the Left to reject Emde, fearing that her presence could stall coalition negotiations. The Left has postponed its scheduled party congress, originally set for Friday, to a later date due to these disputes. Negotiations are also hampered by disagreements over nationalisation policies and a structural budget deficit of €5 billion, complicating any prospective coalition agreement.

Why it matters

The vote will influence the Left’s chances of entering coalition talks with SPD and the Greens.
