Berlin talks explore anti-fascist economic ideas and possible housing expropriation
SPD, Linke and Greens leaders gathered in Berlin to discuss economist Isabella M. Weber’s new book, which calls for public control of key sectors and raises the prospect of expropriating large housing assets.
At a Berlin Urania event, representatives of the SPD, Linke and the Greens convened with economist Isabella M. Weber to launch her book on anti-fascist economic policy. Weber, a U.S.-based scholar who helped design the 2022 gas price cap, argued for shifting essential services such as housing, food, transport, health care and energy out of market logic and into public, non-state oversight. The three party officials expressed agreement with her central theses, though they differed on the speed and scope of expropriation of large housing corporations.
The discussion was supported by the Rosa-Luxemburg-Stiftung, Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung and Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung. Schwerdtner praised the concept as a democratic counter-narrative, Audretsch highlighted the gas-price cap as a precedent for decisive action, and Klüssendorf noted the need for stronger market regulation. The dialogue hinted at a possible “dark-red-red-green” coalition in Berlin, but acknowledged that legal battles over expropriation could take years.
