Bharat Biotech slashes Mosqivac price by 40% in new Gavi-UNICEF pact
Bharat Biotech International will reduce the cost of its malaria vaccine Mosqivac to €5.50 per dose from early 2027 under a Gavi-UNICEF agreement, saving $50 million through 2029.
Bharat Biotech International confirmed that, beginning in early 2027, the price of its malaria vaccine Mosqivac will drop from €9.30 to €5.50 per dose under a new arrangement with Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, and UNICEF. The reduction, amounting to roughly 40 percent, is projected to save $50 million for vaccination programmes through 2029 and allow an extra one million children to be immunised. Mosqivac, the commercial name for GSK’s RTS,S/AS01 vaccine, was the first malaria vaccine endorsed by the WHO in 2021 and is produced by Bharat Biotech after a technology transfer from GSK.
The partnership follows a $200 million joint investment by Bharat Biotech and GSK to expand manufacturing capacity and cut production costs. Demand for the vaccine has outstripped early estimates as African countries integrate it into routine immunisation, with UNICEF having supplied over 74 million doses to date. The price cut comes amid shrinking international aid for health programmes, while Gavi aims to vaccinate an additional 50 million children against malaria by 2030.
Why it matters
Lower vaccine costs could expand malaria protection for millions of African children while easing financial pressure on global health donors.
