BiH polling stations open with new biometric voting technology

Polling places in Bosnia and Herzegovina opened this morning, introducing biometric ID, ballot scanners and rapid result transmission for the general election.

At 7 a.m., polling stations across Bosnia and Herzegovina opened for the general election, featuring biometric voter identification, ballot-scanning devices and fast result transmission for the first time. Eligible voters, numbering in the millions, include citizens residing abroad who may vote by mail or at BiH diplomatic missions in several countries. Over 4,000 operators are on site to manage the new technology, supported by 500 field technicians ready to address technical issues.

The Central Election Commission named more than 5,000 committee presidents and around 3,300 deputies, while some municipal commissions struggled to fill positions due to limited candidate proposals from political parties. Voters may use an identity card, driver’s licence or passport as valid identification.

Why it matters

The election marks BiH's first use of biometric and digital voting tools, potentially speeding results and enhancing security.
