Bill Gates Foundation commits $400 million to AI tutoring as it plans 2045 shutdown

The Bill Gates Foundation has pledged a total of $1 billion to develop and deploy AI solutions for education, frontline health workers and agriculture, designating $400 million—the largest single portion—to create AI-powered tutoring platforms that personalize learning in classrooms across the United States and internationally. This investment aligns with the foundation’s July-launched education framework, which seeks to enable up to 10 million Americans to obtain valuable career credentials before the charity plans to wind down its operations on December 31 2045.

The move arrives as schools worldwide debate the role of digital tools, data privacy and measurable academic outcomes, sparking policy responses such as New York City’s recent one-year moratorium on student-facing generative AI for grades 2-K through 8, a decision that will affect about 600,000 public-school students. Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Schools Chancellor Kamar Samuels also introduced twice-annual AI critical-thinking modules for high-schoolers and limited pilot projects in a few high-school classrooms.

In a statement, Bill Gates argued that without intentional public-sector and corporate action, advanced AI would primarily serve those who can afford it, and that purposeful commitment is needed to ensure the technology benefits the most vulnerable. The foundation’s closure plan, announced in May 2025, includes giving away virtually all its wealth over the next two decades to advance global health and education outcomes.
