Bill Gates warns AI could trigger surge of sophisticated cyberattacks within a year

Bill Gates cautioned that unchecked AI tools may enable a rapid rise in complex cyber threats over the next twelve months.

During a "State of the Union" interview, Bill Gates warned that the combination of bad actors, lax safeguards, and the latest AI models is likely to produce many negative surprises in the cyber realm within the next year. He explained that criminals could exploit AI to extort businesses, disrupt financial markets, and even facilitate bioterrorist weapons, noting that the risk of such attacks could be dramatically higher than natural pandemics.

Cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike’s 2026 Global Threat Report documented an 89% increase in AI-enabled attacks in 2025 and a reduction in the time attackers spend moving laterally across compromised networks to 29 minutes. Gates criticized one outlet governmental response as inadequate and called for stronger regulation and coordination. Democratic strategist Billy Oliver echoed the need for balanced AI progress and smart regulation to protect both national competitiveness and public safety. The discussion underscored the urgency of establishing federal and international standards, platform accountability, and penalties for deep-fake and cyber misuse.

Why it matters
