Billionaire spouses and Gen X heirs poised to claim $6.6 trillion in coming decade
A new Altrata report says about 5,000 billionaire spouses and adult children will inherit roughly $6.6 trillion by 2035, with women and Gen Xers receiving the largest portions.
Altrata’s latest wealth-intelligence report projects that roughly 5,000 spouses and adult children of the world’s 3,795 billionaires will take control of $6.6 trillion of assets by 2035. Women, who currently own just 13 % of billionaire fortunes, stand to gain the most as more than 1,235 female spouses—representing 90 % of billionaire partners—receive large portions of their husbands’ estates. The report highlights Gen X heirs, typically around 48 years old, as the most numerous adult beneficiaries, with 23 % already involved in their families’ businesses.
Inheritances will be a mix of property, listed-company shares, private enterprises and investment portfolios, offering the next generation opportunities to influence venture capital, philanthropy and climate-focused investing. However, Altrata warns that geopolitical tensions, climate pressures and rapid AI-driven change could complicate succession planning and wealth preservation strategies for these future billionaires.
