Appointed by Donald Trump, Tilman Fertitta serves as the United States ambassador to Italy and has turned his $450 million yacht, the Boardwalk, into a floating venue for high-profile gatherings. After arriving last year, he invested more than $2 million in refurbishing Villa Taverna, the official U.S. ambassador’s residence in Rome, and plans to fund a 2½-month coastal tour at a personal cost of about a million dollars.
The 383-foot yacht boasts two helipads, pools, a spa, a gym and a scuba room, and has hosted parties aimed at courting influential Italian figures. Italy’s defence minister praised Fertitta’s enthusiasm for the country and his access to President Trump, while a former U.S. ambassador and a member of Italy’s parliament condemned the extravagance as unsuitable for a diplomatic role. Protesters in Venice chanted against billionaire influence, yet Fertitta maintains that Italians appreciate the attention his presence brings.
