In 2025, Billy Joel was diagnosed with normal pressure hydrocephalus, a condition where cerebrospinal fluid accumulates and presses on the brain. After consulting a neurologist, he initially resisted but later consented to a shunt surgery that successfully alleviated his symptoms, enhancing his balance, memory, and daily function. Medical experts later advised him that the high-volume rock concerts were delivering repeated concussion-type blows to his brain, risking further nerve damage.
Consequently, Joel postponed several dates and ultimately cancelled the rest of his tour after a fall during a performance at Mohegan Sun Casino in Montville, Connecticut. He is now following a regimen of physical therapy and adhering strictly to doctors’ recommendations to protect his health. Joel affirmed his intention to recover fully and return when safe.
